A three-vehicle accident in Norton Wednesday sent five people to the hospital, with one later airlifted to a Tri-Cities medical facility.According to Norton Police Ofc. Tim Burns, the wreck happened shortly after 10:44 a.m. at the intersection of Hawthorne Road and U.S. 58.
A minivan driven by Trevor Lee Powers, 24, of Wise, was on Hawthorne, preparing to turn left onto eastbound 58 headed toward Coeburn.
Meanwhile, a service truck owned by Maria Trucking Co. Inc. of Clintwood was headed east on 58, driven by Lacy Ronald Fletcher of Clintwood.
Apparently, Burns explained, Powers didn't see the truck and pulled into traffic. Fletcher's vehicle struck the left side of the minivan.
The impact sent the minivan careening 60 feet, and it struck a small car driven by Portia Christina Revilla of Norton, according to Burns.
The minivan was carrying three adults, along with children aged one and three.
Everyone in the vehicle was taken to Mountain View Regional Medical Center, Burns said.
One of the adult passengers was injured severely enough that a Virginia State Police medical evacuation helicopter later flew that person to an unspecified Tri-Cities hospital, Burns said.
The other people in the minivan were treated for minor injuries and released from Mountain View.
Neither Fletcher nor Revilla were injured, Burns said.
Powers has been charged with failure to yield the right-of-way.
